Indonesian Ministry of Education and Jejaring AMPL (WASH Networking) hosted the Public Hearing of WASH in Schools National Roadmap on Friday, 22 September 2017.
Attended by 70 participants, this event opened by the Director General of Primary and Junior Level Education, MoE. He emphasised the importance of proper WASH in Schools implementation to ensure the school attendance and continuity, needless to mention the health and economy benefits.
The overview of the roadmap, that is suppported by SNV, Unicef, and other Jejaring AMPL member, presented by the Secretary of the Director General. Later, the Minister Advisor also linked the WASH in Schools with character development. As we know, the WASH in Schools has healthy behaviour component, it is considered as a way to develop the character of the children, who are the agent of change.
The next session was presented by 4 directorates who explained their workplan to achieve the roadmap milestones, as well as SNV who shared the lesson learned from the WASH in Schools implementation in Lampung Province.
Discussion session was divided into 2 groups, who each discussed the issues and strategies in school level and governance level. Both results led to some action plans to be followed up, such as: WASH in Schools legal review, internalisation WASH in Schools into local policy and strategic plan, sinergy between infrastructure and behaviour change programmes, and roadmap and milestones socialisation.
Hopefully, with the attendance and commitment of high profile governments in this event, will put WASH in Schools in more strategic position in WASH development in Indonesia.
